HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Rice University won the opening game of the Conference USA tournament Wednesday morning at The University of Southern Mississippi.
Rice defeated Louisiana Tech 13-12.
The Rice Owls (4-seed) took on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (5-seed), finishing the game with a one run lead.
Throughout the first inning both teams failed to put points on the scoreboard, but by the bottom of the second the Owls were making progress.
Rice's short stop Ford Proctor, C-USA Freshman of the Year, hit a grand slam over the left center field wall, bringing the score to 2-9 in the Owl's favor.
The Bulldogs started closing that gap in the third inning by scoring a two-run homer from Chase Lunceford.
By the top of the ninth inning the Bulldogs were down by one run, but Rice defense held strong.
If Louisiana Tech loses again they will be cut from the tournament.
Rice will face the winner of the Charlotte vs. Florida Atlantic game in round two.
