PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The Veterans Administration of Jackson outreach program is coming to Petal in an effort to help area veterans, who otherwise might not be able to make the trek to the capital.

This is the second time the group has come to the Friendly City to assist and enroll veterans into the program.

Regional office personnel and medical staff will be on hand to help veterans with filing claims or help updating any claims that may be pending.

According to Tom Hardges, recreation director for the city of Petal, this outreach program is a way the VA is showing people that it is supporting and helping veterans, despite the negative news some states are having with the VA.

“It is so important because we have a lot of veterans that can’t make the trip to Jackson and while some cities have buses to get their veterans to Jackson, Petal doesn’t have those kinds of resources,” Hardges said. “So this is a way that our veterans can come here to their hometown and get provided the same services that they would get if they had gone to Jackson.”

The VA will be at the Petal Civic Center on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
