CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

Family and friends of a Forrest County teenager who drowned last year gathered Saturday for a special fundraising event in his honor.

The inaugural Heroes vs. Villains 5K Run and Walk was held in memory of Omar Gonzalez.

He was a 16-year-old Petal High School student who drowned in the Mississippi Sound last May during a trip to Ship Island with a friend.

Money raised will benefit the school's robotics team.

A comic book costume contest was also held.

Family members say Omar was a fan of comics.

"That's what this is all about, not just about raising money for organizations, but helping people remember who he is," said Tamara Abney, Omar's mother. "Because as a parent who has lost a child, that's your greatest fear, that someone is going to forget him, forget his name."

Abney says more than $3,000 was raised during the event.
