Press release from Southern Miss athletics
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After posting eight hits, hitting two home runs and driving in 11 runs in a series sweep of WKU, Southern Miss junior catcher Chuckie Robinson (Danville, Ill.) has earned the Conference USA Hitter of the Week award.
Robinson started the weekend with career highs of five hits and seven RBI in the opener against WKU. His seven RBI in a game was the most by a Golden Eagle since current assistant coach B.A. Vollmuth did it against Rice on May 16, 2010. Dating back to the previous Saturday’s contest at Florida Atlantic through the opening game of the Hilltopper series, Robinson had collected hits in 10 consecutive at bats (with a sacrifice fly as well) for 11 RBI over that three-game span.
Robinson has now hit safely in his last six games, tying his career best. Robinson hit a three-run homer in the opening game against the Hilltoppers and then added a solo shot in the second game of the set. He helped the Golden Eagles tie a season-high for runs scored in an inning with seven as he drove in two runs with a single in the seventh of the WKU series finale.
During the week, Robinson raised his average 27 points to .305 and now ranks second on the team in RBI with 37. Defensively, he threw out his only potential base stealer and fielded all 24 chances successfully (19 putouts, 5 assists).
The C-USA Pitcher of the Week honor went to Rice senior LHP Blake Fox, who struck out a career-best 10 batters during a complete-game shutout at FIU on Saturday.
The award marks Robinson’s first league weekly nod and the second Hitter of the Week accolade for the Golden Eagles this spring. Jake Sandlin captured the award on March 21. This is the first time Southern Miss has had two players earn the C-USA Hitter of the Week award since the 2013 season.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they entertain Louisiana Tech in a C-USA series. The series starts with a 6 p.m., contest on Friday, before continuing at 2 p.m., Saturday, before finishing up with a 1 p.m., Sunday tilt.
