HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Southern Miss baseball team goes to bat against breast cancer this weekend in the 5th annual Pack the Pete in Pink.

"Breast cancer awareness is very near and dear to our hearts here at Southern Miss, and Coach Berry has always wanted to help out with that," said Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing and Sales Kyle George. "So when it comes to fall world series or to our regular season games like we have right now, we're always very helpful and ready to help out those battling breast cancer here in the Pine Belt."

USM partnered with the Pink Ribbon fund, and together they are selling T-shirts and raffle tickets all weekend long. All proceeds will be donated to the Pink Ribbon Fund.

"This program is so unique, in that every dime and every dollar that we earn goes straight to the women we assist financially," said Pink Ribbon Fund Administrator Kaye Ray. "There are no support costs that come out of the funds. Every dime goes to the ladies."

Southern Miss Baseball is happy to play their part.

"It’s a small gesture on our part, but it means a lot to everyone else," George said. "We’re happy to be a part of this opportunity here to support those, because breast cancer touches so many people in our community."

“USM has been a wonderful partner throughout the years," Ray said. "This is a great weekend. It’s wonderful to be involved with USM because they look for causes to assist the community and we're happy to be a part of that."

Last year, this fundraiser was held for a single game, but this year it extends throughout the whole series against Western Kentucky. .

"We hope we raise about a thousand dollars, we'd be happier with more, but based on experience, we feel like that is a good goal,” Ray said.

In the second day of the series, T-shirt sales alone have already surpassed the $1,000 goal. The Pack the Pete in Pink weekend is a win in the fight against breast cancer.
