Southern Miss enters the weekend 25-26 overall, including an 11-10 mark in Conference USA play, while UTEP is 22-28 overall and 13-8 in the conference. The Miners have already solidified their spot in the 2016 C-USA Softball Championships, while the Golden Eagles are looking to punch their ticket this weekend.
The Miners hold a slight 15-13-1 (.534) advantage over the Golden Eagles in the all-time series. The two teams have played every season dating back to 2006.
The series with UTEP marks the first time since 2013 the two teams have played in Hattiesburg. The past two season, Southern Miss has made the trip to El Paso for the three-game series.
The Black and Gold hold a 6-3-1 (.650) overall mark in the series at home. The last time the two teams met in Hattiesburg in 2013, Southern Miss and UTEP each won a game in a series that was cut short due to inclement weather. The Golden Eagles took three games in the prior meeting in 2011, marking the last Conference USA sweep by the Black and Gold until a three-game C-USA sweep of North Texas this season.
Southern Miss is 9-6 (.600) against UTEP in the last 15 meetings between the two teams, including a 4-1 (.800) record at home in that time.
Last season, the Miners edged the Golden Eagles 7-5 in game one, using a walk-off home run to claim the win. Southern Miss rallied in game two, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning to post a 13-6 victory and even the series at 1-1. UTEP was able to claim the series with a win in the rubber match the following day.
In the victory, Southern Miss broke a 4-4 tie with a seven-run fifth inning to take control of the game and hand UTEP its first home loss of the season. The Golden Eagles batted around, scoring seven runs on eight hits to take an 11-4 lead. In the game, Arielle Pollock hit her first collegiate home run, a two-out solo homer off of the scoreboard in right center field.
