PINE BELT (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport experienced some significant damage from last month’s heavy rains.

Executive Director Tom Heanue said damage occurred because of drainage ditch erosion near the south end of the airfield.

He has applied for funds for the emergency repairs totaling just over $195,000.

"You have got to get the problem fixed,” Heanue said. “Jones County has been very supportive. Forrest County has been very supportive. But when this rain hit it just took the dirt and everything that was there with it. We've already got a contractor, we've already opened competitive bids. Got a contractor, working with banks to see who will give me the best loan rate."

FEMA can possibly reimburse up to 80 percent of the damage cost with the remaining portion to be split by Jones and Forrest counties.
