Today the Hattiesburg Police Department helped out with Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
The purpose is to stop people from flushing old drugs down the toilet but still dispose of them properly. The Drug Enforcement Agency said flushing the drugs hurts the environment and wildlife that lives in water. Several people in the Pine Belt helped out by bringing old drugs to the police department.
“The medicines and so forth, a lot of them are poisonous to different things and they end up in the sewer systems and in the lagoons. They pollute a lot of things with it, so the best thing to do is get rid of it,” said resident John Atkins.
In the past five years, the DEA destroyed more than 5.5 million pounds of unused prescription drugs.
