LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Lamar County has filed an appeal against the city of Hattiesburg regarding the annexation proposal to expand the city limits further into the county.

On April 19, the Hattiesburg City Council passed an ordinance 4-0 at its meeting to annex land in both Forrest and Lamar Counties.

On Thursday evening, Lamar County filed the appeal in Lamar County Circuit Court.

The appeal reads:

"Notice of the appeal from the decision and/or procedures of council of the city of Hattiesburg, Mississippi to adopt the ordinance enlarging, extending and defining the corporate limits and boundaries of the city of Hattiesburg, in Forrest and Lamar Counties, Mississippi adopted at the 5:00 p.m. meeting on April 19, 2016."

The appeal cites rules 5.04 and 5.05, uniform rules of Circuit and Chancery Court practices.

The bill of exceptions has been tendered to the mayor of the city of Hattiesburg and requesting the record for appeal be assembled and upon receipt therof will be filed with this court.

"This is an appeal that challenges how the executive session was handled and what was discussed regarding the annexation," Lamar County Administrator Jody Waits said.

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
