Seven On Your Side wins big at the MAPB awards

The WDAM 7 news team attended the Mississippi Association of Public Broadcasters awards in Jackson Saturday night where they took home many accolades for their work in the community. 

Seven On Your Side took home six first place awards, and 17 finalist awards. 

The first place awards included: 

  • Best Public Affairs Reporting
  • Best Franchise Reporting
  • Best Investigation 
  • Best News Videographer 
  • Best TV Reporter  
  • Achievement Award

The Best Public Affairs Reporting award and the Achievement award was given for WDAM 7 News 30 minute special on the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. "Katrina Untold" told the stories from the devastating category 5 storm that had never been told before. Exclusive interviews with Governor Haley Barbour, Sheriff Billy McGee, Randy Swan, and Robin Roberts were featured in the special. 

Best Franchise reporting was awards for the news team's work helping bring awareness to Breast Cancer with their monthly "Pink Up" reports. These reports are sponsored by Kim's No Bull in Laurel, and feature inspiring stories of survival, hope, and breakthrough research. 

Seven On Your Side swept the Investigative Reporting category of the awards. The first place win was awarded to Mike McDaniel, Nick Ortego, Whitney Argenbright and Ryan Moore for their work investigating lavish spending with tax payer dollars through the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center. Other works awarded in this category were for investigations into the Forrest County Jail audit, and the questionable spending made by the Hattiesburg Public School District.

Best News Videographer was awarded to Ryan Moore, and Best TV Reporter was awarded to Amanda LaBrot.

Ryan's videography included his dedicated coverage of the 2015 Hattiesburg officer shootings of Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate, as well as his beat coverage of Pine Belt crime.

Amanda was awarded Best TV Reporter for her investigative work, specifically her investigation into questionable strategic planning spending in the Hattiesburg Public School District, and her on camera storytelling.
