HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hundreds of Forrest County residents got rid of their hazardous household waste in an environmentally-friendly way Saturday.

They brought their unused pesticides, waste oil, old tires, paints and electronics to the Bobby Chain Airport for the "Right Way to Throw Away Day." Waste disposal companies were on hand to accept the products. The event was also held at the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center in Purvis.

"We did not have this for a period of two years and before that, we were having it every year, and so, the pent up demand seems to have really been pent up," said Chris Bowen, Forrest County Dist. 5 supervisor.

"The carport was getting too full, it's great, it's needed," said Harry Butler of Hattiesburg, who dropped off several items.

A grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality sponsored the event.
