HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Some Pine Belt residents are honoring veterans who fought for the South during the Civil War.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans hosted a memorial service at the Forrest County Courthouse in recognition of Confederate Memorial Day.
It featured the laying of wreaths and prayers for soldiers who died.
Monday is the official state holiday.
"It's about Mississippians honoring our soldiers in a war," said Rick Forte, a member of the LTG Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp 1353 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. "They fought bravely and honorably and that's what we're about."
About 260,000 Confederate soldiers died in the war.
Of those, about 95,000 were combat deaths.
