HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
A University of Southern Mississippi organization has been recognized for encouraging dozens of students to become organ, eye and tissue donors.
The College of Health Ambassadors Wednesday received $500 from the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency for its achievements in the fourth annual Donor Challenge last fall. The group got more than 200 students to sign up to be donors.
In the last four years, the group has added more than 1,000 people to the organ registry.
Currently, there are about 1,500 Mississippians who are in need of a transplant.
Nationally, about 122,000 people are on transplant lists. An average of 22 people each day die before they can get a transplant.
