LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

On Tuesday, The Laurel Police Department awarded the 2008 Officer of the Year to K-9 Officer John Stringer, and the 2009 award to Investigator Kim Stewart.

Both Officers are 11 year veterans of LPD.

Officer Stringer is currently assigned to Patrol as a K-9 Handler, FTO and is in training to become a K-9 instructor.

Investigator Stewart has served in Patrol, Narcotics and is currently assigned to CID.

The presentation had previously been suspended because of lack of funding and sponsorship. At the time of the suspension, a vote had been conducted for the 2008 and 2009 honor.

In February 2016, The Laurel Police Department, with the help of generous sponsors, revitalized its Officer of the Year Award.

Sergeant Mitch Sumrall received the honor for 2015 at that time.
