The trial of Ricky Portis began Monday in Jones County as the jury was seated and each side presented their opening statements.
Portis is charged with sexual battery of two children, one who was 8 years old at the time and the other who was 9 years old.
The state told the jury that the two victims both have a specific STD, which was the result of the sexual assault by Portis, a disease he also has.
Officers and investigators associated with the case were the first to take the stand.
They testified that the victims indicated the sexual assaults began when they lived in Illinois, prior to the family moving to Mississippi, but continued once they moved to the state.
The initial report was filed on Feb. 21, 2015, stating a 9 year old female had been inappropriately touched.
During that investigation, a forensic interview was conducted with the victim that led investigators to Portis as the suspect involved. It was revealed that on numerous occasions he had assaulted the victim.
On March 4, Jones County Sheriff's Department arrested Portis on that charge.
Further investigations by the Jones County Sheriff's Department led to the second victim which also indicated that Portis had inappropriately touched her.
The trial will continue on Tuesday.
