Annual Petal-Southern Miss Pow Wow underway in the Friendly City

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Members of Native-American tribes from across the southeast are in the Friendly City this weekend for an annual celebration of American-Indian culture.

The Petal-Southern Miss Pow Wow at Hinton Park featured several types of traditional dancing, Native-American crafts and lots of food.

It's co-sponsored by the Golden Eagles Inter-tribal Society.

Tribal participants say the event is a great way to share their culture with others.

"You always remember the places that you go that the people were very nice to you, courteous, everything was good and we get good energy, good feelings from this area here," said Dan Isaac, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.

"The atmosphere that we have in the town of Petal and the college of Southern Miss, they just treat us very good," said Vance Beaver, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation in Oklahoma.

The pow wow wraps up Sunday afternoon.
