HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
The Hattiesburg Fire Department and the American Red Cross are going door-to-door in parts of the Hub City Saturday to try to prevent house fires.
It's part of a state-wide program called the Home Fire Campaign.
Firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will be canvassing neighborhoods in the Arledge Street and William Carey University areas of Hattiesburg to hand out free smoke detectors and fire prevention literature.
Fire department officials say they will be focusing their efforts on homes with senior citizens and people with mobility issues.
The goal of the program is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over the next five years.
