HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Kidney tests were given free of charge on Thursday for people at risk for kidney disease.
The event was hosted by the Mississippi Kidney Foundation and held at the Oak Grove Community Center. Tests included blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checks.
Dr. Daniel Habeeb spoke about the importance of being tested for kidney disease.
"The state of Mississippi particularly has a prevalence of kidney disease, and that's because of our obesity rate and a prevalence of diabetes and high blood pressure," Dr. Habeeb said.
Kidney disease is sometimes called the "silent disease" because there are no symptoms.
The Mississippi Kidney Foundation said that the disease can be "treated if caught in the early stages."
They also advise people to get tested if you have a family history of the disease.
