VisitHattiesburg announces search to officially name Hattiesburg residents

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission.

If you are from New York, you are a New Yorker!  If you are from Los Angeles, you are an Angeleno!  But, what do you call someone from Hattiesburg?

This was the question posed to the City of Hattiesburg by USM Polymer Science student, Andrew Smith in February.  Interestingly, it was a question the City had never been asked.  So, they asked VisitHattiesburg.  VisitHattiesburg had also never been asked this question.

So, to remedy this 132-year old dilemma, VisitHattiesburg, in partnership with the City of Hattiesburg, is embarking on a quest to officially name Hattiesburg natives and residents. As part of National Tourism Week activities, VisitHattiesburg and the City of Hattiesburg will announce the official name (demonym) for Hattiesburg residents at the Annual Tourism Partners Luncheon on Wednesday, May 4.

The public is encouraged to vote for the official name of a Hattiesburg resident by completing the official VisitHattiesburg Voting Form, found on and at the VisitHattiesburg Facebook Page. Participants will have the option to vote for a name, or write-in an option of their own.  Voting is

now open and will continue through April 27. After results from the public are tabulated, the top name options will be presented to a panel of local celebrity judges, who will convene to choose the name for Hattiesburg residents.

Anyone who would like to participate in the official naming contest can log onto or visit the VisitHattiesburg Facebook page for more information.

National Tourism Week is officially recognized as a time to celebrate and champion the tourism industry throughout the United States.
