Copy-Former Saint Will Smith shot to death in Lower Garden District

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans police are investigating a double shooting in the Lower Garden District, that left one man dead and one woman injured. New Orleans Coroner Jeffrey C. Rouse confirmed early Sunday morning the male victim in the incident is former New Orleans Saint defensive end Will Smith, 34.

Police said the incident occurred around 11:29 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Camp and Felicity Streets.

Investigators said Smith was driving an SUV east near Sophie Wright Place, when he was rear-ended by a Hummer H2. The impact caused Smith's vehicle to hit the rear of an Impala, which police say was traveling with the victim.

After the collision, police said Smith and the driver of the Hummer exchanged words. During the argument, the driver of the Hummer pulled out a gun and shot Smith multiple times and the victim's wife twice in the right leg. His wife was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Hummer, identified as a 30-year-old, is in police custody and is being questioned by investigators. The weapon used in the incident is also in police custody.

We will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
