Flood victim who lost everything wins dream prom contest

HATTIESBURG, MS - Prom is one of the most important moments in a teen's life. One Perry county teen didn't think she would be able to go after her family lost all of their belongings in a recent flood.

After winning a contest, she will now have a prom fit for a princess.

Angel Woods was randomly selected out of 1200 girls to win a prom dress from Occasions in Hattiesburg.

"I was so excited and I wanted to cry at the same time," Woods said. "I was so happy."

This is the fourth year Occasions has given away a free prom dress. Owner Dianne Garner said it is a chance for a girl who would not otherwise have the opportunity for a dream night.

"I just think this year we really hit the mark with Angel," Garner said. "She's a precious girl and I think she's most deserving and she was extremely thankful."

Two weeks ago Woods and her family lost their entire home and their belongings in the flood. Her mother April Trahan said the family is still dealing with the loss.

"We've been blessed but you know still displaced," Trahan said. "I know we're blessed because a lot of people are still living in their homes that were damaged. Luckily we have a place to stay for right now until we can repair or move into another home."

Woods will not only get a new dress, but she will also receive shoes and jewelry from Occasions.

Her hair and makeup will be done at The Abbey Salon,Spa, & Boutique in Hattiesburg and she will receive a dinner for two at the Purple Parrot Café in Hattiesburg.

She said she's overwhelmed with joy.

"There were a lot of pretty dresses," Woods said. "There were so many to chose from ,and all the girls were really helpful and really nice."

Despite the tragic event, Angel said this experience is a blessing.

"Like a princess, a dream come true, like Cinderella," Angel said.

Woods' prom is Saturday, April 16. She said she looks forward to revealing her dream dress to her date and friends.
