HATTIESBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The University of Southern Mississippi received the NCAA Committee on Infractions' Public Report related to allegations involving the institution's former Men's Basketball staff during the academic years 2012-13 and 2013-14.
The issuance of the Public Report is the final step in the NCAA's enforcement process.
The statement from the University regarding the infractions said:
The Committee also concluded that former coaches and members of the men's basketball staff committed Level I and Level II violations. No member of the current coaching staff and no current student-athletes were involved in the violations, according to the statement issued by the university.
"I would like to thank the NCAA Committee on Infractions for their service and for the opportunity to appear before them earlier this spring," said Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett in an issued statement. "Now that their work is complete, we can focus on rebuilding our men's basketball program as we work to provide the quality experience our student-athletes, alumni, and fans desire and deserve."
Southern Miss Director of Athletics Bill McGillis said, "I am very pleased that this matter has reached its conclusion and that we can move forward in a positive manner. We respect the Committee's decision and appreciate that they recognized our level of cooperation and the affirmative steps the University took to expedite the final resolution of the case. Maintaining an unwavering commitment to integrity, and a strong culture of rules compliance, is fundamental to our athletics program and a core value that can never be compromised.
"I am very proud of the way Coach Sadler, his staff and the outstanding young men in our program have persevered over the last two seasons through extraordinary adversity which was not of their making. We have a bright future in men's basketball and there are great days ahead for our program."
Southern Miss Head Men's Basketball Coach Doc Sadler said "I want to thank our administration and our fans for being supportive of our basketball program and players during the last two years. Most importantly, I want to thank our players for having a tremendous work ethic and outstanding attitude during these difficult times. As a result of some of the penalties imposed, we will face some challenges in the near future. However, because of our great fan support and our players' commitment, I am very excited about the future and our ability to return our program to a championship level."
