The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Jazz Lab Bands will perform their spring concert Monday, April 11 at 7:30pm at the Thirsty Hippo in Hattiesburg. Tickets are $5 for general admission, and admission free to USM students and faculty with identification. The program will consist of works by John Clayton Jr., Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely and others.
"The ambience, the acoustics, and the close proximity to the audience at that venue makes for a concert experience much like going to some of the great jazz clubs such as the Vanguard in New York” says director of Jazz Studies, Larry Panella. “I went to hear my first jazz concert ever in a club in Beverly, Mass. And we were able to be right up close and then have a chance to meet the artists between sets. Playing at the Hippo is much like that for me.”
Pittsburgh native and graduate assistant to the Jazz program David Pellow is a seasoned performer in club and concert settings and has performed with numerous great jazz artists. He will both be performing with Jazz Lab 1 and directing Jazz Lab 2.
"He brings a wealth of experience both as a leader and performer and we are very fortunate to have him," said Panella. "We hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to hear great music in a great space and come and talk to us afterward while they are at it. We love connecting with them personally and musically."
