HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival began Wednesday at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The festival, now in its 49th year, celebrates authors and illustrators and encourages young minds to explore the world of literature.

This year more than 500 teachers and librarians from across the nation are gathering at USM for what organizers are calling a whirlwind of celebrations.

"This is an exceptionally exciting book festival for us because not only is it the 49th Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival, but it's the 50th anniversary of the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection,” USM de Grummond Collection Curator Ellen Ruffin said. “It's the centennial of Ezra Jack Keats, and it's the 75th anniversary of Curious George.">

The festival goes through Friday.  For more information and a list of events, click here.
