HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg City Council voted Tuesday evening to oppose the spray field ordinance passed by the Lamar County Board of Supervisors.
The vote was 4-1, with Ward 2 Councilwoman Deborah Delgado in opposition.
She has been opposed to land application all along and has wanted the city to use a mechanical treatment system.
City Council President Kim Bradley said the council will follow the process to objecting to the ordinance.
"There's a lot of anger, a lot of hatred and they are our neighbors and we have to work together," Bradley said. "But they need to understand too that we're trying to find a solution for a metropolitan area that we're being mandated from the federal government to do this, and it just happens to be the best soil in the Pine Belt happens to be that track of land that's there on Highway 11 in Lamar County."
Bradley also said this is the first time the council has met since the ordinance was passed.
