HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg business went up in flames Monday night just before midnight.

Hattiesburg firefighters responded to a fully-involved fire at 1818 Broadway Drive, at the Broadway Wine & Liquor store.

"When we got on scene there was heavy smoke visible to one building, adjacent to the hotel, so we kept it all contained to one building," said Hattiesburg Fire Department Capt. Mike McSwain. "We called multiple units in with two ladders once we realized the size of the fire, it was already to far gone once we got on scene."

The roof of the business collapsed during the blaze and the structure is a total loss according to fire officials.

The business is connected to the Broadway Inn, however firefighters were able to keep the fire from damaging that portion of the building.

Firefighters attempted an interior attack of the business, but were forced out due to the burning ceiling inside.

Broadway Drive was closed in the 1800 block due to fire trucks hose lines, motorist are urged to use an alternate route.

"The cause of the fire will be under investigation, we will have to stay on scene well into the morning to put out hot spots and watch the scene," said McSwain.

Investigators should be able to work the scene tomorrow depending the amount of heat left inside the structure according to officials.
