HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Alumni and supporters of Hattiesburg High School gathered Saturday night to raise funds to help offset recent budget cuts to the school's speech, debate and theater programs.
An Alumni Arts Gala at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center was the second fundraiser by the newly-formed Speak Up Hattiesburg organization.
The event featured music, comedy and other entertainment from Hattiesburg High School alumni.
Current Hattiesburg High musicians also performed.
"It's just a travesty that the funding is being depleted now and we can't allow that, I can't allow that to happen," said Miles Doleac, gala director.
"(Speech, debate, theater) helps you get into better colleges and then, into better graduate schools, and then helps you do things like give back to your community," said Harold Pizzetta, an alumni supporter. "It would be a shame to lose that type of extra-curricular activity for Hattiesburg High."
Next month, Speak Up Hattiesburg will host a 'Spring Clean for Forensics' garage sale.
