    Gov. Phil Bryant announced today that 11 additional counties have been added to Mississippi’s most recent disaster declaration due to March flooding and severe storms. Clarke, Forrest, Greene, Jones, Marion, Panola, Perry, Quitman, Sunflower, Tunica and Wayne counties are now eligible for FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program.

PURVIS, MS (WDAM) -

The National Weather Service surveyed Purvis Friday morning and confirmed that a low-end EF-1 tornado touched down in the area.

The storm caused roof and tree damage near Purvis Upper Elementary School.

A downed tree was blocking the front drive of the school, and a few shingles were taken off of the roof. 

According to Lamar County Superintendent Tess Smith, there were no injuries and all students are safe. 

Trees and power lines were also reported down near Aldon Road and Stonfield Drive.

    Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
