Senate passes bill on objection to gay marriage

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Senate has passed a bill that says government employees and private business people could cite religious beliefs to refuse licenses or other services for same-sex couples who want to marry.

House Bill 1523 (http://bit.ly/1Mq4DyE ) passed the Senate 31-17 Wednesday night.

It will move back to the House for more work.

The bill also says the state could not punish businesses that refuse to sell goods or services to same-sex couples or religious groups that refuse to let gay or lesbian people be foster or adoptive parents.

Mississippi is one of about 10 states where such bills were filed in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling last summer that effectively legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
