HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Vietnam veterans across the Pine Belt will be the guests of honor during an upcoming event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The Hattiesburg Veterans Committee is hosting a "Thank You" program for Vietnam veterans on Armed Forces Day, May 21, at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.
It is a free event for all Vietnam veterans and their spouses or a guest.
Tickets will be $15 for all other attendees.
Government officials, along with military, business and religious leaders will be on hand to personally thank veterans for their service.
Each veteran will also receive lunch, a limited edition challenge coin and a commemorative T-shirt.
"We never really shook the hand of that Vietnam veteran, pat him on the back and said 'good job' or thank you for your service and we want to see if we can't do it today," said Ted Tibbett, chairman of the Hattiesburg Veterans Committee.
"We're inviting all Vietnam veterans, please sir, please m'am, come and be a part of this, so we can say 'thank you' for your service to this country," said Charles Brown, a member of the Hattiesburg Veterans Committee.
The program is part of a national observance of the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War.
