HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Conference USA announced its weekly awards and Southern Miss baseball’s senior outfielder Jake Sandlin was tabbed Co-Hitter of the Week. Sandlin, who was 4-for-4 in a win over Alabama and then added five hits and three RBI in a series win at Marshall.
He was joined by Florida Atlantic junior second baseman Stephen Kerr, who reached base 11 times in the Owls series victory at Middle Tennessee. UTSA senior right-handed pitcher Aaron Burns threw a complete-game six strikeouts to lead the Roadrunners to a 6-1 victory over Rice and earn the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award.
Sandlin hit safely in all four games during the week to increase his hitting streak to a current team-high eight games, which ranks as the second-longest hitting streak for the club this season. He opened the week with a career-best four hits and three runs scored in a 9-2 win against Alabama and then doubled in two runs in the first game of the Marshall series. Sandlin added a pair of hits in each of the final two contests against the Herd. He finished the week batting .500 (9-for-18) with a walk, a stolen base, a double, three RBI and five runs scored.
Sandlin is the first Golden Eagle to earn Conference USA Hitter of the Week accolades this season.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they entertain Tulane at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
