HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Zeta Phi Beta sorority held its annual scholarship luncheon Saturday afternoon.
The money raised will go toward scholarships for seniors in high school who need financial aid for college. The luncheon held a silent auction and also honored six people for their accomplishments in the community. The sorority gave away awards for scholastic programs, small businesses and community outreach. Van Jones won the "Scholastic Endeavor Award" for creating an after-school program called the After School Academics and Arts Program.
"We introduce them to the arts and help them identify with their artistic gifts like dance, music and art," Jones said. "We also partner with other tutoring programs as well."
At the end of the month the sorority will decide which students will be rewarded scholarships.
