Town Square Park near downtown Hattiesburg now has a new guest
It is a sculpture called "Emergence" created by Georgia artist Ryan Lamfers.
The sculpture is a self-portrait piece that Lamfers said was inspired from the Easter Island heads off the coast of Chile in South America.
"I think it's great, every place it goes it kind of takes on a new life, so the culture of the community kind of gives something else to the piece and it grows and people take what they want away from it so I think it's fantastic,” Lamfers said.
Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art President Becky Montague said the organization is excited to have this piece of artwork. They hope it will have the impact of coming out of the soil.
She said it is about time that Hattiesburg starts looking a little bit more like the creative place that it is.
“It just gives us all so much more pride in our city,” Montague said. “We've got all these really creative people in town with all of our artists and musicians. And it's just about time, we think, that Hattiesburg Start looking a little more like the creative place that we know that we are."
The sculpture will be on display until spring 2017.
