LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A 75-yard section of Highway 589 has been washed out due to the recent rains between Purvis and Hattiesburg.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has blocked the road between Burnt Bridge Road and WPA Road. Residents are advised to use alternate routes when traveling.

MDOT engineers are saying it could take months to reconstruct the highway, but no injuries or property damage have been reported.
