GRAPHIC IMAGES: Lamar County: 2 dead dogs spark ongoing investigation

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Lamar County authorities are investigating a case of alleged animal cruelty after two dogs were found dead under a bridge.

Authorities received a 911 call Tuesday night about the dogs that were discovered submerged in water under a bridge off Old Highway 11.

“We take this very seriously, any reports of, anything against animals, you know because certain types of crimes against animals can evolve to crimes against humans, so we take it very seriously,” Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said.

Deputies are working the area and going door-to-door to find any information they can.

“The animals had been there for a while so it’s really hard to tell exactly what happened, there’s a lot of rumors going around out on social media about how the dogs were tortured, we really can’t tell at this point,” Rigel said.

Sheriff Rigel said they will continue to work the case, but is still unsure if an actual crime, like animal abuse was committed.

“The caller said it looked like the animals had been tortured and then killed, but again, it’s really hard to tell with the condition of the animals, and the advanced stage of decomposition they are in,” Rigel said.

Sheriff Rigel reached out to the United States Humane Society for help in the case.

“They are offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the case, and if they determine an actual crime was committed,” Rigel said.
