HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Charges have been upgraded for the man involved in a high-speed chase with Forrest County deputies Wednesday afternoon.
Jeremy Simmons is in custody and has been charged with grand larceny-auto as well as aggravated assault and felony fleeing.
As the investigation continued, investigators determined the vehicle driven by Simmons was stolen, according to Forrest Co. leader investigator Nick Calico.
Just before 1 p.m., authorities received a call about a reckless driver traveling north on Highway 49. Within minutes, deputies spotted a white Dodge Challenger and began pursuit after the vehicle refused to stop. Simmons turned onto James Street and then attempted a U-turn before ramming into a deputy's patrol car.
The deputy was not injured.
Simmons' vehicle eventually came to rest at a stop sign at the corner of James Street and Orchard Street after losing one of its front wheels.
Simmons was checked out by ambulance personnel, and was taken into custody after being cleared of any injury.
K9 units were used to inspect the car at the scene, but nothing was found.
