CLINTON – The 2015-16 season came to an end for the Jones County Junior College women’s basketball team here Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Region 23 Tournament.
Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter to break open a close game and went on to defeat JCJC, 76-63, here in the A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College.
The Lady Bobcats end the year at 19-7.
Baton Rouge, 14-14, will face Itawamba at 2 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals. ICC edged Southwest, 58-57.
In other games, Holmes upset MACJC champion East Central, 77-75, and Copiah-Lincoln played Northwest in the late game.
JCJC got off to a slow start.
The Lady Bears jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Hanah Lott finally hit a 3-pointer at the 5:42 mark of the first quarter. JCJC fought back and tied the game at 14-14 on Tatyana Lofton’s long jumper with 2:10 left in the first quarter.
Lofton’s 3 pointer with 10 seconds showing gave JCJC its first lead at 17-16.
Myyah West hit two free throws at 7:51 of the second quarter and added another at 7:12 to give JCJC a 20-16 lead – which would be the longest lead of the game for Jones.
The Lady Bears outscored Jones 13-5 over the next 5 ½ minutes and took a 29-25 lead with 1:28 left in the half when Amber Smith converted a 3-point play.
BRCC led 31-30 at halftime.
Lott and Aliyah Bell each scored in the first minute of the third quarter to put JCJC ahead, 34-31. Moments later, West’s inside basket gave the Lady Bobcats a 36-35 lead with 6:18 showing and that would be JCJC’s final lead of the game.
Leading 39-38, BRCC then went on an 11-0 run and took a 50-38 lead with 1:50 left in the third quarter when Smith scored on a steal and a layup. The Lady Bears led 53-42 after three quarters.
Lofton’s 3-pointer from the left wing pulled JCJC within 53-47 with 8:27 left in the game. But BRCC ran the lead back out to 62-51 with 5:25 to play on two Celica Sterling free throws.
The Lady Bobcats then got a 3-point play from West and two free throws from Zan Ratcliffe to cut the margin to 62-56 with 4:32 left. But JCJC would get no closer.
Bell’s putback with 1:47 made it 70-61. The Lady Bobcats then forced a turnover, but misfired on a 3-point attempt and BRCC went on to the victory.
Lott paced JCJC with 15 points. Lofton and West added 13 points each.
Sterling topped the Lady Bears with 27 points and Smith had 22.
