HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - When a Hattiesburg fire truck passes by in the Hub City, take a closer look and you may notice some trucks will be sporting a new logo.
Administrators from the department got a group of art students from The University of Southern Mississippi to come up with a few designs.
"The students gave us about six different designs and I narrowed that down to two and let some of the guys in the department weigh in and that's how we made the choice," Hattiesburg Fire Chief Paul Presley said.
The new logo is already on the newest vehicle in the fleet, a 107 foot ladder truck.
"Some stuff we have traditional, like the old patches, I wanted to keep the old patch because I think that's just part of our history in the department," Presley said. "It means a lot to me to be able to change things up, it's a new generation, younger guys, and they all want a little something different."
The new logo will be placed on each new truck and piece of equipment the department purchases.
"We are hoping to get a heavy-rescue truck next, and those logos would be placed on it," Presley said.
The logos will also be added to new shirts, and other items worn by members of the department.
"To have something designed by Southern Miss student's means a lot to the department as a whole, we look out for that campus and it's a part of all of us for each shift," Presley said.
Presley said the department will have a ceremony for the new ladder truck and a more formal unveiling of the logo sometime soon.
