PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

A new fire protection rating in the city of Petal will mean savings on insurance for property owners.

The Mississippi Rating Bureau announced this week that it was increasing the city's rating from a 6 to a 5.

The adjusted rating was based on a recent rating bureau survey of personal and commercial properties to evaluate the fire protection capabilities of the Petal Fire Department.

"Typically, a $100,000 to a $150,000 house, your looking at anywhere from $60-$150 dollar per year (of savings)," said Tony Ducker, Ward 5 alderman for the city of Petal.

"I think there is always room for improvement," said Marion Sims, assistant fire chief for the city of Petal. "But, the (fire department personnel) did a great job with this, so give it a couple of years and we'll try to shoot for a four (rating)."

The new rating went into effect on Feb. 24.
