PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Saturday night wreck in Perry County injured five and claimed the life of a Hattiesburg girl.

Sydney Stewart, 18 of Hattiesburg was pronounced dead Monday afternoon at Forrest General Hospital.

According to Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict, Stewart died from internal injuries sustained during the one-vehicle wreck.

The wreck occurred on Forest Service Road 304, off Highway 29, south of New Augusta around midnight Saturday, according to Perry County Sheriff Mitch Nobles.

“It was a one-vehicle wreck, one person was airlifted to Forrest General Hospital from the scene, and five more were also injured in the wreck,” Nobles said.

The wreck is under investigation at this time; however, Nobles said alcohol is believed to be a factor. No charges have been filed at this time, but that is pending the outcome of the investigation.

“At this time we are still in the investigation process, we are waiting on toxicology reports to come back so we know for sure, but from what we have learned so far in the investigation, alcohol was a factor,” Nobles said.

Visitation for Stewart will take place Thursday from 5-7 p.m., following with a memorial service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Sydney Stewart Memorial Fund at any branch of Hancock Bank.
