PINE BELT (WDAM) - With severe weather trekking across the Pine Belt Tuesday, it is vital to know the importance of tornado sirens.
According to the National Weather Service, sirens are for outdoor warning purposes. They are not meant to be heard indoors.
When you hear a siren, it is a signal to get indoors, find a safe place in your home and seek additional information about the severe weather.
When the sirens stop sounding, it does not mean that the threat is over in your area.
In fact, the sirens are activated by city or county officials, not the NWS.
