LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A single-vehicle accident sent a mother and her son to the hospital Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 7 a.m. the two struck a power pole on West Hills drive in Lamar County near Hattiesburg.

The Nissan Pathfinder traveling southbound rolled over and landed on its side, according to an official on the scene.

The son and his mother were in the vehicle. The boy managed to escape, and broke a car window to save his mother, according to his sister, who was not at the scene at the time of the wreck.

Seven On Your Side talked to the victim's sister, Laterria Brister, who was at her school bus stop nearby when the accident happened.

"We just heard a big boom when she hit the concrete, then we looked down and there was a truck flipped over with a light pole next to it," Brister said. "Well he was in the car and he busted a window out so they could get out and he hurt his wrist and he fractured some bones and his mouth is messed up. My momma, she just skinned up her elbow and stuff."

The 11-year-old was transported to a local hospital with his mother where he is being treated for his injuries.
