PURVIS, MS (WDAM) -

A Purvis man was seriously injured in a fire that destroyed his home Saturday night.

It happened at a residence at the corner of Lyles Street and Martin Luther King Drive around 9:30 p.m.

Purvis fire officials said he received burns to his hands and face. George Stevens with Lamar County Fire Department reported the victim was rushed to Forrest General and later airlifted to the burn center in Jackson around 2:30am.

Officials said a neighbor alerted them to the fire. About one dozen firefighters from Purvis, Rock Hill, Pine Ridge, Oak Grove and Southeast Fire departments responded to the blaze.

Though firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire, Stevens added there was inactivity of electricity and the fire might have been caused by a candle.
