PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The city of Petal is hosting a prestigious regional police dog competition for the first time.

The U.S. Police Canine Association's annual Region 26 certification trials began Tuesday in the Friendly City and will conclude on Friday.

More than two dozen K-9 teams from across the state are participating.

Dogs are being tested on their obedience, agility, search and apprehension skills.

On Wednesday afternoon, competitors ran through an obedience course at the Russell Sports Complex. They also underwent cadaver, bomb and narcotics searches.

On Thursday morning, they took on an agility course at the Petal Animal Clinic on the Gandy Parkway. Then the dogs competed with article and suspect searches.

On Friday, the police K-9 units will compete in criminal apprehension with gunfire trials.

The top four teams will advance to a national competition.
