PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The city of Petal is hosting a prestigious regional police dog competition for the first time.

The U.S. Police Canine Association's annual Region 26 certification trials began in the Friendly City Tuesday and will conclude on Friday.

More than two dozen K-9 teams from across the state are participating.

Dogs are being tested on their obedience, agility, search and apprehension skills.

On Wednesday afternoon, competitors ran through an obedience course at the Russell Sports Complex.

On Thursday morning, they will take on an agility course at the Petal Animal Clinic on the Gandy Parkway.

The top four teams will advance to a national competition.
