HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

An award-winning journalist who helped reopen several unsolved murder cases from the civil rights era spoke at the University of Southern Mississippi Tuesday night.

Jerry Mitchell talked about civil rights cold cases at Bennett Auditorium during the first University Forum of the Spring 2016 Semester.

Mitchell is an investigative reporter for the Clarion-Ledger and his work led to convictions in the Medgar Evers and Vernon Dahmer murders.

His message to students was "live fearlessly."

"Living fearlessly is not about living without fear," Mitchell said. "LIving fearlessly is about living beyond fear, living for something greater than ourselves."

Mitchell is also working on a book about cold cases, called "Race Against Time."
