Report: Hopson hires assistant head coach

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss head football coach Jay Hopson has made another addition to his staff in Tim Billings, former athletic director and head football coach at North Lamar High School in Texas, according to a report.

The report states that Billings will become the new assistant head coach at Southern Miss.

Billings joined the University of Memphis defensive staff in 2012, according to his biography on the North Lamar Football Program website. In the first season at the University of Memphis, Billings coached the defensive linemen. In 2012 Memphis lead the league in total defense in conference games and in 2013 Memphis was ranked in the top 20 conference defensive rush.

His biography goes on to say that prior to taking the defensive line position at Memphis, Billings oversaw the Wake Forest wide receivers during the 2006 and 2007 seasons and then supervised the secondary in 2008 and 2009. He worked with the defensive ends in 2010 and coached the outside linebackers and was co-defensive coordinator in 2011.
