Petal Church reopens three years after tornado devastation

PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

A church that was destroyed three years ago by a devastating tornado held its first service in a new sanctuary on Sunday.

The Mount Vernon Missionary Church in Petal is rebuilt, remodeled and filled with eager worshipers.

Pastor Carl Burkett said the church is bigger than the old sanctuary and can seat over 100 people.

While the church was getting rebuilt, the members of Mount Vernon prayed with neighboring churches like Petal First Baptist, Crestview Baptist Church and Carterville Baptist Church.

Burkett has preached at Mount Vernon for 33 years and said he is happy to be at the new church.
