PETAL, MS (WDAM) - The Petal Fire Department has updated its policy on carrying firearms to reflect changes in Mississippi gun laws.
Although fire department personnel will be allowed to keep guns locked in their vehicles, they will not be allowed to open carry at any station or property occupied by the fire department.
Certified law officers are exempt.
Fire department investigators who open carry can only do so during active investigations.
The policy was changed after a firearm was left out on a table at one of the stations.
"This is a safe place for kids, we have a lot of people from the public stop in," said Joe Hendry, chief of the Petal Fire Department. "Even when we're not here, people will stop, trying to check with us and get some information about something and they won't realize it until they're here. We don't want anything left out in the open, ever."
Petal's Board of Aldermen approved the changes this week.
