POPLARVILLE – First-year head coach David Saunders and his staff made the most of a limited recruiting window as they signed 31 players to National Letters of Intent Wednesday, National Signing Day for high school seniors.
Saunders was especially pleased with the inroads the Wildcats made in PRCC’s traditional six-county district, which includes Forrest, Lamar, Marion, Jefferson Davis, Pearl River and Hancock counties.
“Obviously, we’re excited about the quality of players from our area programs,” said Saunders, who was named to the Wildcat position on Dec. 8.
“It’s big for our program. Our local programs are so competitive, so not only are we getting talented athlete, but athletes who come from an environment of high expectations to compete for and win championships.”
Of the 28 players on PRCC’s initial list of signees, 18 come from the six-county district, including Lumberton’s Daylon Burks, who rushed for more than 2,700 yards this past season. The list also includes three players from Hattiesburg High, three from Pearl River Central, two from Forrest County AHS, a pair from East Marion and two from Poplarville.
Also joining the Wildcats are two players from Spanish Fort (Ala.) High, which went undefeated in winning the Alabama Class 6A state championship. They are multi-talented Javon Brown, who accounted for more than 2,100 yards last season, and defensive lineman Demond Knight.
The Wildcats also landed one other out-of-state player in offensive lineman Solomon Kinley, from Jacksonville, Fla., who was credited with 40 pancake blocks last season at Raines High.
“We were able to meet some specific position needs across the board with this class,” Saunders said. “And we also did well with our out-of-area players. We identified some top talent from around the state. We’re excited about this class.”
Saunders and the Wildcats face a rebuilding project after finishing 2-7 in 2015. He said his staff have a couple of other players they are hoping to sign in the next few days.
